Eran Riklis is a screenwriter, director, and producer. Riklis studied at Tel Aviv University’s Department of Film and Television Studies and later, continued his education in the UK. Upon his return to Israel, he directed his feature film debut, On a Clear Day You Can See Damascus (1984) where one can already recognise themes and motifs that will recur in his body of work over the next few decades: socio-political engagement and activism, exploring Israel’s status in the eyes of its [Arab] neighbours, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and music.

Riklis is one of Israeli film’s most prolific and successful directors. His 1993 film, Zohar, took home two Ophir Awards in the Best Leading Actor category (Shaul Mizrahi), and for Best Soundtrack. In 1999, his film Vulcan Junction won the Best Film Award at the Haifa International Film Festival, and an additional three Ophir Awards for Best Costume Design, Best Soundtrack, and Best Score. Then in 2004, Syrian Bride went on to win scores of awards at festivals around the world, including an Audience Choice Award at the Locarno International Film Festival, and the top prize at the Montréal World Film Festival.

His 2008 film, Lemon Tree, also became a festival darling, winning multiple international awards including the Audience Choice Award in the Panorama section of the Berlin International Film Festival, and an award at the San Sebastián International Film Festival. For her performance in the film, Lemon Tree’s Hiam Abbass won an Ophir Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role. In 2010, Riklis’s The Human Resources Manager, which made the official selection for the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), won an Audience Choice Award at the Locarno International Film Festival, and an additional five Ophir Awards, including Best Film and Best Director.

Highlights of his other film credits include Cup Final (1991), Playoff (2011), A Borrowed Identity (2014), and Spider in the Web (2019). Riklis has also directed a number of TV series including Ephraim’s Woes [‘sipurey efraim’] (1995), Deadly Fortune (1995-1997), and The Truck (2002-2004).

Riklis is married to screenwriter and director, Dina Zvi-Riklis, and in 2006 he produced her hit film, Three Mothers.
