A documentary film about the Jewish underground radio broadcasts in Mandatory Palestine.
In a makeshift studio made of blankets, an announcer stands in front of a mobile transmitter, turns on the microphone, and whistles a line from Hatikvah. The broadcast starts. From the end of the 1930s’ until the Israeli Declaration of Independence, Jewish underground groups were broadcasting the very messages the Mandatory government tried to censor: reports of operations carried out against British authorities, updates on Jewish immigrant ships headed for Palestine, and propaganda against the occupation. Lehi’s “Kol HaMachteret Ha’Ivrit”, Irgun’s “Kol Zion Halohemet”, and Haganah’s “Kol Israel” (also known as “Telem Shamir Boaz”) were the soldiers of the Jewish Resistance Movement in the radio battlefield.
This film follows former announcers as they return to the apartments that served as studios, explain how they escaped the British CID, and even reread some of the most dramatical announcements broadcasted by the underground stations.
