An episode of Israfilms LTD’s documentary series “Thanks to Those Times” about the establishment of Israel.
A Parisian hotel, 1947. A young, elegant man approaches Ehud Avriel, sits next to him, and unfolds a catalog of a Czechoslovak weapon factory. “I stare at this man amazed,” recalls Avriel, who was back then on a mission to purchase arms for Haganah, “and I ask the man: ‘how many guns like this can we get?’ And he replies ‘five thousand, ten thousand, a hundred thousand, as many as you like.'” Bombs, shells, mortars, bullets, explosives, and guns were indispensable to Mandatory Palestine’s Jewish community at the break of the War of Independence. Those who were back then employees of Israel Military Industries and members of the underground purchase network in Europe speak in this film about the secret deals, daring operations, and hidden workshops that provided the future State of Israel with what it desperately needed: weapons.
