The film “First Steps”, produced by the Israeli Film Service in collaboration with the Ministry of Aliyah and Absorption and the Jewish Agency, describes the immigration of Jews to Israel from the Soviet Union in the 1970s and their integration into Israeli society. The film introduces new immigrants who tell about the process of their absorption in the country and the help that the state has provided them in finding jobs. Immigrants who arrived with higher education were cared for by the Ministry of Immigration and Absorption which took care of finding them a job in their field of employment or assisted in retraining, while immigrants who arrived without higher education received help from the employment bureau in finding work in the industry. The immigrants say that they are satisfied with their status and place of residence and hope that in the future they will be joined by their families and relatives who are still in the Soviet Union.
