Excerpt from Episode 27 of the TV series “This Week 25 Years Ago”, created by the Israel Film Service, as part of the 25th-anniversary celebrations of the establishment of the State of Israel.
The Battle of Yad Mordechai began with the invasion of the Egyptian army a day after the declaration of independence of the State of Israel. The Egyptian army moves north toward Tel Aviv and bombed the city from the air. A regular Egyptian brigade engages in battle against Yad Mordechai, but the kibbutz blocks its progress despite the Egyptians’ absolute military superiority. 150 fighters, men and women, are defending the besieged kibbutz, and reinforcements sent to it are unable to break through the Egyptian siege. The kibbutz’s ammunition runs out, it suffers heavy losses and surrender is inevitable. The story of a handful of fighters standing besieged without assistance against a regular Egyptian brigade becomes one of the great stories of the battles of 1948.
