Excerpt from Episode 26 of the TV series “This Week 25 Years Ago”, created by the Israel Film Service, as part of the 25th-anniversary celebrations of the establishment of the State of Israel.
The excerpt focuses on Operation Bin Nun Alef, aiming to capture Latrun from the Arab Legion, which fails, but an alternative attempt to conquer the villages of Beit Jiz and Beit Susin a day later succeeds, enabling the army to establish an alternative route to Jerusalem from Kiryat Anavim through Hulda. This route, known as the “Burma Road” (Isreal), bypasses the Latrun checkpoint and traverses the no-man’s land between the Israeli forces and the forces of the Arab Legion. The convoys of jeeps make the run on the new route every night for about three weeks, but when the first truce comes into effect their role ends.
(Screenwriter: Tamar Liebes; Narrator: Ram Evron; Editor: Jean Claude Zerviv; Historical advisors: Dr. Netanel Lorch, Dr. Gavriel Cohen, Col. Avraham Elon, Col. Gershon Rivlin, and Gavriel Lurie)
