A 35 episode documentary TV series created by the Israeli Film Service. The script follows a week by week account of events in the 1948 war starting with the 1947 UN resolution on the Partition Plan for Palestine and concluding with Israel’s first Defense Forces Parade, on July 27, 1948.
The twenty-second week of the war. Operation Jebusite is launched with the aim of creating territorial continuity between Jewish quarters in Jerusalem. The Harel Brigade joins the Haganah forces in the battle for the city and Yitzhak Sadeh commands the fighting, which will last about two weeks. The battles over San Simon, Shuafat Beit Iksa, Nebi Samwil, and Sheikh Jarrah encounter fierce Arab fighting. General David Elazar describes the battle of the San Simon convent in Katamon, Jerusalem, and the resilience of the warriors. Until the last minute, Elazar says, it was not clear whether the platoon would survive, and the commanders decided that if they lost the battle, they would blow up the room housing themselves and the severely wounded. Yigal Alon would later characterize Operation Jebusite as based on mistaken intelligence data that anticipated that the British would evacuate earlier than expected, leading to the capture of their bases by Arabs and allowing them to maintain the siege on Mount Scopus. In 1949, the mountain would become an enclave that ceasefire agreement with Jordan would allow a small convoy under UN supervision to ascend the mountain once every two weeks.
