On the night of October 30-31, 1956, with the outbreak of the Suez Crisis, the Egyptian destroyer Ibrahim al-Awal was sent to attack the port of Haifa. In a combined military operation by the Israeli Navy, Air Force, and French Navy, the destroyer was subdued and taken to serve the Israeli Navy.
