David Ben Gurion makes an official visit to Britain and the United States. He receives an honorary doctorate from Brandeis University and then goes to the White House to meet President Dwight Eisenhower. Ben Gurion visits Vice President Richard Nixon in his home, accompanied by Israeli Ambassador to the United States, Avraham Harman. He also travels to the UN building in New York, where meetings are held while students protest against Israel outside. At the end of his visit, he is welcomed at Lod airport by Finance Minister Levi Eshkol and others. During the welcome ceremony, Ben-Gurion concluded that the trip did not go well.
