Special broadcast for Israels 14th Independence Day. At his official residence in Jerusalem, President of Israel Yitzhak Ben Zvi awards certificates of merit to outstanding IDF soldiers. Some of the soldiers are injured. Afterward, the president hosts members of the diplomatic corps. The foreign representatives congratulate the president and Minister of Foreign Affairs Golda Meir for the holiday. In a park in Tel Aviv, Mayor Mordechai Namir hosts foreign diplomats, clergymen, and other guests in a festive reception. In a studio, Prime Minister David Ben Gurion delivers a speech to the citizens of Israel, regarding the countrys future challenges. A day before the Independence Day, Yom Hazikaron (Memorial Day for the Fallen Soldiers of Israel) is commemorated. A siren sounds, and pedestrians and vehicles stop in their tracks. The president participates in a memorial in the center of Jerusalem, Commander of the Israeli Air Force Major General Ezer Weizman participates in a ceremony for the forces fallen soldiers on Mount Tayasim, Mayor of Jerusalem Mordechai Ish Shalom lays a wreath during a ceremony on Mount Herzl, and bereaved families visit the graves of their loved ones. In Shaar HaGai, wreaths are laid by remains of armored trucks from the War of Independence. In the evening, a torch ceremony is held on Mount Herzl. A gun salute is performed and fireworks are launched to mark the start of Independence Day. In city centers across Israel, many residents dance and watch dance and music performances. The following day, the IDF parade is held in Tel Aviv. Ben Gurion, Ben Zvi, Chief of the General Staff Lieutenant General Tzvi Tzur, President of Gabon Leon Mba, and American singer Frank Sinatra watch the parade along with half million citizens. An armored column, military vehicles, an infantry column, and an air force aerobatics display go past. The holiday ends with a traditional folklore dance festival in Haifa.
