Forty Ashdod Port Laborers and Their Wives Go on Hunger Strike

After 40 laborers of the Port of Ashdod went on a hunger strike in demand to receive tenure from the Port Authority, their wives join their protest and block the entrance to the port. Other port workers spontaneously join the women, and cars and trucks heading to the port queue in a long line in front of the blocked entrance. At the Ashdod Workers Council building (Beit Lazarus), the 40 laborers on strike sit on the floor. During the six days of their strike, some of them are evacuated in ambulances to a hospital. Finally, the Histadrut concedes to help the laborers receive at least 16 workdays at the port each month, and they end their strike.
