The children of Kibbutz Maoz Haim in the Jordan Valley celebrate a communal Bar Mitzvah. For these children, who are raised in a childrens’ “Home”, the Kibbutz Bar Mitzvah is a rite of passage and an educational experience lasting a full year. The experience includes participation in the diverse agricultural activities, supporting at the dining room, volunteering and participation in night patrols. The students replace their schoolteachers at school. They also head out to visit communities with a different profile: Morrocan immigrants at Moshav Rehov and a religious family at Kibbutz Ein Hanatziv. The children set up a tent camp on the Kibbutz grounds, and prepare an impressive musical presentation for the formal Bar Mitzvah reception. The events conclude with the release of doves over the Jordan river towards Jordanian Territory, as an expression of a desire for peace.
