“Through Our Eyes,” aired in 2001, is a TV documentary series of short episodes focusing on Ethiopian born creators in Israel. It was produced by the Israel Film Service and presented by Tibebe Solomon.
This episode focuses on Alemu Shete, a painter and sculptor.
Alemu Shete became interested in painting and sculpture in his youth. Without paper and painting materials, he lived in Ethiopia, where he painted on the human body and concocted the colors of the painting himself. Upon arriving in Israel in 1982, Shetee began Archeology and Middle Eastern studies at Tel Aviv University. He later joined the art seminary at Beit Berl College, where he extended his knowledge of painting, sculpture, and videography. While producing the series, he continues to paint, teaches art, and guides groups through museum exhibitions.
Shete presented his works in group exhibitions in museums in Israel and abroad. He exhibited at the Eretz Israel Museum in Tel Aviv, the Knesset [Israeli Parliament] gallery in Jerusalem, and the Ramat Gan Museum of Art. His works were also exhibited internationally in France, Brazil, Germany, and the United States. Shete was influenced by the renowned Ethiopian artist Afework Takele and well-known Israeli artists. He hopes to exhibit his works in a solo exhibition shortly.
