A collection of excerpts from the film record of the UN deliberations on Palestine in 1947, which includes Abba Hillel Silver’s address to the UN Political Committee on behalf of the Jewish Agency in May of 1947, as well as archival footage from the pivotal General Assembly on November 29th of that same year, where the UN ruled in favor of the establishment of a Jewish state in Israel. In Dr. Silver’s speech, meant to present the Jewish case for the termination of the British Mandate and the recognition of a Jewish state by the UN, he stresses the importance of recognizing the historical connection of the Jewish people to the land and the grounds for reconstituting their national home there; he also points out the achievements already made by Jewish people in Palestine, which cannot be erased, and assures the committee that the Jewish state would be based upon full equality and rights for all of its inhabitants. Silver reminds the committee of the international obligation to ensure the continuous development of the Jewish national home, and asserts that the pioneering achievement and high human idealism of the Jewish people in Palestine would be a blessing for both Jews and Arabs. The final excerpt of the collection shows Oswaldo Aranha presiding over the General Assembly’s voting on November 29th, with 33 countries voting in favor of the Partition Plan and the establishment of Israel.
