A promotional film produced by the Israeli Ministry of Information in New York, as part of a series called “This is Israel.” The film showcases the central cities of Israel and focuses on Beersheba, the ancient city turning into the new capital of the Negev. The young metropolis is shown nurturing new neighborhoods and public buildings, becoming a vibrant hub for the residents of the Negev, new immigrants and local Bedouins alike. Beer Sheva is also presented as the center of the developing industry of the desert, from the “Yuval Gad” pipeline factory near Ashkelon to the extraction plants in the Dead Sea. Among Israel’s cities, the narrator concludes, some are rooted in yesterday while others celebrate the present day, yet Beersheba is the city of tomorrow.
