documentation of a conference marking the 30th anniversary of “Operation Wedding,” produced by the Israel Film Service and directed by Boris Maftsir.
Operation Wedding: Despite its practical failure, it stood as a significant milestone in the struggle to liberate Soviet Jews. On June 15, 1970, a daring group of Jewish refuseniks and human rights activists in the Soviet Union attempted to hijack an empty civilian plane. Their goal was twofold: to spotlight the dire situation of Soviet Jewry and the impossibility of leaving the Soviet Union through legal means, and to seek refuge in Israel.
Among the distinguished speakers at the conference are participants of the operation, such as Rabbi Yosef Mendelevich, Vladimir Mayakovsky, Eduard Kuznetsov
, and Yaakov Kedmi, former head of the Nativ organization. The event is enriched with artistic performances and archival footage, providing a vivid portrayal of the operation’s historical significance and its lasting impact on the immigration of Soviet Jews to Israel.
