A documentary film produced by the Israeli Film Service in collaboration with the Haifa Municipality and the Haifa Arts Foundation.
When Yardena Cohen was young, she believed her life’s mission was to work in agriculture and build the land. “I never said ‘I will be a dancer,'” she recalls. However, even when her talent led her from fieldwork in Hadera to dance stages in Europe, Cohen never left Israel’s landscape behind. On the contrary, she embedded it in her art and created original Israeli dance.
Two years after winning the Ministry of Education’s lifetime achievement award, and seventy years since she began teaching, Cohen is still far from concluding her career. A series of interviews with her and her students paint a portrait of one of the pioneers of dance in Israel, who, at the age of 92, is still actively working.
The film features Cohen’s students, including Yehudit Arnon, Tahel Ran, Nira Ne’eman, Rina Yerushalmi, Miri Alon, Avraham “Yagmo” Levi, and Nassim Nassar al-Din. The film also features dancer Rami Be’er, the dancers of the Matte Asher group, graduates of the Beit Berl College, Itim Ensemble dancers, new students of the Druze dance group in Dalit al-Carmel, Cohen’s assistant, Mary Kadosh, and Eliyahu Gamliel.
