Independence Day celebrations in Israel take place as the military parade is held in Haifa. Soldiers march at the entrance to Haifa, the Israeli Air Force holds a flypast, and young people dance folk dances. The parade is attended by President Yitzhak Ben-Zvi, Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion and Chief of Staff Moshe Dayan who review the parade from the podium. UN Secretary-General Dag Hammarskjöld arrives in Israel as part of his mission of mediating between Israel and Egypt, Foreign Minister Moshe Sharett greets UN Secretary-General at Lydda airport. Afterwards UN Secretary-General Hammarskjöld meets with Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion and Foreign Minister Moshe Sharett, and an announcement of a ceasefire between Israel and Egypt is declared.
