Directing duo Mili Ben Hayl and Tamar Shippony’s stylised film, shot in expressive black and white, seeks to pierce through the surface image of the “perfectly normal” family, and spend 48 hours in the ‘trenches,’ as it were. In that period, viewers come face to face with the harrowing catalogue of abuse, oppression, and humiliation endured by Gili – a young mother who is effectively a prisoner in her own home – caught in toxic relationship with Noam who continues to deny her, her independence. All the while, their young son walks around the house in his headphones, trying to drown out the horror. The film seldom portrays actual physical violence. Instead, it highlights a different, more subtle strain of abuse – one that coasts far too smoothly under society’s radar.
