Director Eyan Fox’s film, based on a screenplay by his long-time partner Gal Uchovsky, follows the stories of several young adults who live, work, and party on Tel Aviv’s once-legendary Sheinkin St. – the very heart and epicentre of the so-called Tel Aviv ‘bubble’ – located right between the city’s iconic music shop, Third Ear Records (that has since relocated), and the beloved and much-missed restaurant, Orna & Ella (long-since closed.)
Noam (Ohad Knoller) is an assistant at Third Ear Records. Yahli (Alon Friedman) is a shift manager at Orna & Ella, whereas Lulu (Daniella Wircer) works in an artisanal soap shop. Ashraf (Joe Sweid), a young Palestinian arrives at their flat-share, who Noam once met at a West Bank checkpoint, when he was stationed there as an IDF reservist and helped to deliver a woman in labour.
Ashraf and Noam become romantically involved and soon, the three flatmates invite him into their home, their lives, and their ‘bubble-esque’ existence where they shelter themselves from the bloodied, violent reality of Israeli life. They find Ashraf a job, give him an alias, and turn him into a bona fide Israeli and Jewish-passing Sheinkinite [think proto-hipster – EE] – however, the rims of their tenuous bubble are neither strong nor durable enough, leading the trio to an inevitably explosive rude awakening.
The Bubble was shown at multiple international festivals. It was especially well-received at the Berlin International Film Festival where it was showcased as part of the Panorama section and won a CICAE (the Arthouse Cinema Award), and the Teddy Award given out to films that take on LGBTQ topics and themes.
The film is studded with cameos by Israeli screen and entertainment A-listers of the day including broadcaster and journalist Guy Pines, actor and screenwriter Dana Modan, and actor Lior Ashkenazi.
