Director George Obadiah’s romantic melodrama was the first Israeli film to have been made following the 1973 Yom Kippur War and was watched in cinemas by nearly 200,000 people.
The film explores the impact of the Yom Kippur War on Israeli society. Shoshana shows up at the hotel where her husband works as the manager to take him with her to hospital after their daughter, Vered, had fainted at school with suspected appendicitis and is now being rushed into surgery. Her unannounced arrival, however, has dramatic repercussions when Shoshana catches David in a highly compromising position with female a tourist which, subsequently, leads to their divorce.
David immigrates to the US whilst Shoshana moves to Jerusalem with their daughter – who then runs away to Tel Aviv where she meets Nissim (Nissim Sarousy), a singer and friend of her father’s who takes her in. Nissim soon discovers that Vered is a natural-born singer and starts to mentor her though her music career. Within a decade, the two marry.
At the start of the Yom Kippur War, David returns to Israel to enlist and is then injured in combat. He is now in need of a blood transfusion, but the hospital has no available doses of AB-type blood. When Vered, who works as a volunteer at the hospital, learns that she is a match for a patient in urgent need of her blood type, she immediately rushes to donate – only to discover that the intended recipient is none other than her estranged father. Shoshana and Nissim also show up at the hospital and in true George Obadiah film tradition, all’s well that ends well.
The film’s soundtrack features original music by Nissim Sarousy, including the songs ‘End of the Road’ (‘sof haderech’), ‘The Prayer’ (‘hatfila’), and ‘New Day, Another Day’ (‘yom hadash’.)
