Shemi Zarhin’s debut film is a comic drama that earned critical acclaim and brought about 100,000 viewers to cinemas. The plot takes place during one Passover night in the life of an Israeli family and focuses on the secrets, conflicts, and small dramas of each family member.
The family matriarch, Yona (played by Gila Almagor), suspects that her husband Michael (Yosef Shiloach) is cheating on her, but he is actually preparing a surprise for her. Their son Elhanan (Itcho Avital) arrives with his wife Dalia (Esti Zakheim), who struggles with weight issues and is suspected of stealing food set aside for the holiday meal. Their other son Nataniel (Alon Aboutboul) comes with a new young girlfriend (Dana Berger) to provoke his ex-wife and mother of his child, Gila (Anat Waxman). The daughter Dorona (Miki Kam) has difficulty dealing with her own daughter, who stopped speaking about two years earlier. The youngest brother Shai (Dror Keren) was once half of a set of twins, but is left alone after his twin brother was killed during military service.
The film won the Best Screenplay award at the Montreal World Film Festival and a Special Mention at the Jerusalem Film Festival. Esti Zakheim’s performance earned her the Ophir Award for Best Supporting Actress.
In 2025, a stage adaptation of Passover Fever was presented at the Haifa Theatre, directed by Moshe Kapten.
