Filmmaker Uri Bar-On’s documentary follows the unlikely story of eight-year-old Lati, son of Aziz Diouf – a Senegalese migrant worker who had moved to Israel, and Irena, a new immigrant from Belarus. Lati, who was raised Israeli for all intents and purposes, learns that he is in fact descended from Senegalese royalty and as the grandson of the Serer tribe’s last king, he is now first in line to the throne. Aziz would like his son to embrace his royal destiny and inherit the kingdom. Therefore, the family sets off for Africa to learn more about their past and trace the roots of the intended heir to the Serer throne. Young Lati, meanwhile, must grapple with his aversion towards this new alien place, coupled with feelings of homesickness and the weight of his father’s hopes and dreams on his young shoulders.
