Death lurks at every nook and cranny in director Hadar Friedlich’s award-winning film; reflected in the face of the elderly characters that inhabit its narrative sphere; in the characters that have gone and are no more; and in the death of the kibbutz movement that hangs heavy over the day-to-day life captured in the film. Between Batia Bar’s understated performance and cinematographer Talia (Tulik) Galon’s extraordinary camerawork, Friedlich paints a portrait of Hannah, a widow in her sixties whose life changes when the kibbutz – of which she was a founding member – is privatised. Whilst the privatisation is underway, Hannah also reaches retirement age and suddenly finds herself feeling completely and utterly redundant. She tries go on with her life and work, expect reality forces her to adjust to the radically changing kibbutz reality and in doing so, reevaluate her own life.
The film was featured at a variety of festivals in Israel and around the world, including the San Sebastián International Film Festival and the Jerusalem Festival. Beautiful Valley took home the Critics’ Choice Award At Montpellier’s Cineméd (the International Mediterranean Film Festival).
