Director Dan Verete’s film is set in the Palestinian village of Susya in the southern region of Mount Hebron, where local residents live in camps and caves in a state of abject poverty, with no running water or electricity. Verete follows their story, and that of four Israelis who feel a sense of shared destiny with the locals and make it their mission to help improve their dire living conditions.
The reality forced upon the residents of Susya is a badge of shame, shared equally between the State of Israel – the occupying power – and the Palestinian Authority, with its so-called devolved administrative powers. “It’s an insult to injury, to insult!” says Ariella, one of the four Israelis determined to help the locals. The solution that they, and the locals, come up with and try to implement is to build a local wind turbine that would allow the residents of Susya to keep the lights on in their homes even after dark.
