Haim Bouzaglo’s crime film centers on a violent confrontation between two organized crime families – the Marciano family and the Bouzaglo family. While the criminals battle for control of casinos in Europe, police officer “Strudel” (a nod to the famous Israeli officer Ephraim “Kremshnit” Ehrlich) attempts to bring them down.
Like classic mafia films, especially The Godfather, Bouzaglo’s story intertwines crime with family life, tradition, and food (“Leave the gun, take the cannoli”). The film opens with a traditional Friday-night Kiddush: the “family” gathers around the table as the father blesses and breaks the challah. Shortly afterward, news arrives of assassinations between the rival crime families.
The Moroccan families depicted in the film, much like the Italian families in The Godfather, are immigrant families that turned to crime in order to climb the social ladder and gain respect. As in Francis Ford Coppola’s mafia saga, honor often clashes with family values. When the conflict escalates, Miro Marciano, the son who avoided the criminal world and became an officer in the Israeli army, tries to broker a reconciliation. But in the world of the Bardugo and Marciano families, peace rarely lasts.
In 2011, the TV series Marziano’s Honor aired on Channel 10, based on the film.
