Director Daniel Sivan’s film is based on a cabaret act of the same title which, in the early noughties, earned cult status in the Israeli fringe theatre scene. Nati Ornan, an unknown musician who has failed, repeatedly, to make a name for himself decides, in a moment of panic, to invent ‘Gotel Botel’ – his alter ego who would, hopefully, be his ticket to long overdue Rock ‘N Roll superstardom. Indeed, things soon take off for him, and Gotel Botel becomes the darling of the local music scene; however, this Jekyll and Hyde-esque personality split is not without its consequences as Nati gradually begins to dissociate from reality, which may end up costing him not only his adoring fans but his now booming career.
The release of this indie musical drama was marked by a then-completely novel way of distribution which saw the film come out exclusively online.
