Agave Plants are Grown in the Negev

On land purchased by the Jewish National Fund near Beer Sheva before the establishment of the state, two million agave plants were grown. After the harvest, the fibers are separated and dried in Moshav Gilat and from there are transported to another factory for the production of ropes and sacks. The factory was established with the help of reparation money, investors from Mexico, and assistance from the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. Additional seedlings are set to be planted in the future and the industry should provide work and livelihood for the residents of the Negev.
