Israeli forces perform a raid beyond the Suez Canal. The soldiers are briefed, then armored vehicles travel past villages, agricultural plots and deserts. Explosions light the sky and reflect in the canal. A large flame burns in the night. The soldiers return at dawn. It is reported that four Israeli soldiers were killed as opposed to tens among the enemy. The raid is a retaliation for the killing of 13 IDF paratroopers by Egyptian commando forces at the end of May. It was initiated by commander of the Southern Command, Major General Ariel Sharon. The Commando unit Shaked, led by Lieutenant Colonel Danny Wolf, was selected for the mission. It was supported by Defense Minister Moshe Dayan, and against the opinion of Chief of Staff Haim Bar-Lev. Two months later, the cease-fire between Israel and Egypt takes effect. The crossing of the Suez Canal via boats as done in this operation will serve as a model for the crossing of the canal in the Yom Kippur War.
