On Jerusalem Day, several events mark two years of the unification of the city after the Six Day War. On Ammunition Hill, a state memorial ceremony is held for Israeli soldiers who died at the site during the Six Day War, during the conquest of East Jerusalem. Bereaved families participate in the memorial ceremony alongside Mayor Teddy Kollek. Bereaved mothers lay wreaths on the monument which states the names of the 36 Israeli soldiers killed in the battle on Ammunition Hill. A crowd of 15,000 people participates in a mass prayer at the Western Wall Plaza, saying a prayer of gratitude (Hodaya) on the occasion of the citys unification, as well as a commemoration prayer in memory of the soldiers killed in the Six Day War. Brigadier General Mordechai Motta Gur, commander of the Paratroopers Brigade which was one of the central army units that conquered the city, reconstructs in an interview the breaking into the city through the Lions Gate.
