Events Mark Memorial Day and Independence Day

Yom Hazikaron, 1964: A military memorial ceremony for fallen soldiers from Gush Dan is held on the Tel Hashomer military base. Teenagers place flowers on the memorial. A cornerstone for a memorial for the casualties in the battle on Kfar Etzion is placed in Moshav Nir Etzion. Chief of Staff Yitzhak Rabin and Minister of Interior Chaim Moshe Shapira participate in the ceremony and spill cement into the memorial’s foundations. President Zalman Shazar and Mayor of Jerusalem Mordechai Ish-Shalom participate in a memorial ceremony in Jerusalem, which begins by lowering the Israeli Flag to half-mast. Families visit graves of fallen soldiers in Mount Herzl, where an honor guard is formed by Israeli Navy soldiers. Minister of justice Dov Yosef lights the memorial torch.

Independence Day Eve, 1964: The Israeli flag at Mount Herzl is brought up high again. Honorary shots are fired. Citizens that came to Israel as illegal immigrants in the days of the British Mandate light the Independence Day Torches in Mount Herzl. Thousands celebrate in the streets of Tel Aviv. Bands play in balconies. About a quarter-million people, including the Mayor of Tel Aviv Mordechai Namir, watch a maritime display. Independence Day is celebrated also in Nazareth, where Deputy Prime Minister Abba Even participates in a ceremony and Arab bands play. Performances and fireworks display takes place all over Israel.

Independence Day, 1964: The IDF parade takes place in Beer Sheva. Workers shine bleachers. Mayor of Beer Sheva Eliyahu Nawi observes the preparations for the parade. Citizens slept near the parade location to catch a good view of it. Among those viewing the parade are Prime Minister Levi Eshkol, former Prime Minister David Ben Gurion and President Shazar. The parade begins in a fly-past by the Air Force. Military vehicles drive past the General Chief of Staff and the soldiers salute him. 2500 soldiers participate in the parade. Elsewhere, Israeli Citizens celebrate in picnics.
