At the height of World War I, a new protest art movement was born in Zurich – Dada was its name and it set out to reboot the art world in the face of the horrors of war. One of its founders was Marcel Janco – a young Romanian Jew who, at the time was studying architecture in Switzerland. Janco soon become one of the most prominent artists in the movement and in 1941, moved to British Mandatory Palestine. It was here that Janco went on to found the Ein Hod art village and became one of the most influential artists in local, cultural history. In this film, Baram follows Janco both at his home and whilst working and in the process, explores the ways in which his work has changed and evolved since leaving Europe and settling in Israel. Marcel Janco – White on White is a traditional, humble, and skilled cinematic portrait whose brilliant cinematography and direct approach succeed in capturing even a fraction of Janco’s sheer brilliance.
