Students at Tel Aviv’s Aleph High School of Arts’ Music and Theatre departments team up with their German peers from the Schwerin Conservatory. Together, they put on a play inspired by the testimonials of Manke Alter, a Theresienstadt ghetto Holocaust survivor. The young students – a third generation since the Holocaust and WWII – speak Hebrew and German on stage whilst playing that “decadent music” together. Against the backdrop of present-day Berlin, this ‘theatre of testimony’ allows them to portray historical truth whilst at the same time, honouring the younger generation’s right to not be forever burdened by memory. The Holocaust survivor tells an unforgettable story, but the music played by the young students is also heard saying, “Yes to memory, but also to the sound of a different tune.”
