Director Idit Shehori’s debut feature follows four female protagonists: there’s Dorit, the leader of the pack; Tamara, the divorcee who has all but given up hope; Gilly, who has just completed her military service and has moved to the big city, and the beautiful Leor. The four women get together for one weekend in Tel Aviv during which they attempt to fight off the boredom and loneliness with a string of parties, drugs, and sex. Weekend Circles was released in cinemas in 1980 and became one of Israeli film’s earliest explorations of an urban, Tel Aviv-centric narrative told from a woman’s point-of-view.
