In the early 1960s, acclaimed French director Chris Marker (The Pier), was invited by Wim and Lea Van Leer, founders of the Jerusalem Cinematheque and Film Archive, to come to Israel and make a documentary about the then-12-year-old state. The result was a fascinating, impressionist journey, in the course of which Marker examines the country and raises a series of questions, having realised that Israel’s most fundamental struggle isn’t one for survival per se, but rather for the shape its cultural and spiritual identity is to take.
He explores an array of historical, social, and moral issues whilst pondering the meaning of symbols, collective memory, and the boundaries between the private and public sphere. The film won the 1961 Berlin Film Festival’s Golden Bear Award for Best Documentary.
