Parts one and two of director Amir Gil’s film project were made nine years apart. In 1986, whilst still a student at the Beit Zvi School of the Performing Arts, Har-Gil made a short film which follows a group of five 13-year-olds from various areas and backgrounds in Israel: There’s Sa’ar from North Tel Aviv; Monder from [the Christian-Arab town of] Taybeh; Yossi from the working class southern industrial town of Ofakim; Yehoshua from the Hassidic village of Kfar Habad; and Meir from kibbutz Ma’abarot. Through a series of interviews with the boys, in which Har-Gil explores all that is similar and different in their daily routines, viewers are offered a glimpse of the teens’ lives, their passions, and dreams in what forms a microcosmic patchwork of Israeli society, at large. The film went on to win Best Short at the Jerusalem Film Festival.
In 1995, nine years after making part one, Har-Gil revisits his five protagonists who are now all grown up, as he examines all that has changed or remained the same in their lives, and where each young man is today.
