Boaz Davidson’s hit cult film which marks the end of the ‘bourekas’ film era, follows the coming of age story of Alex – a pre-Bar Mitzvah teen in 1950s Tel Aviv – his relationships with his friends; his Polish mother; their lodger, Farouq; Mimi, the girl he’s in love with, and his auntie, Lola, who came to Israel to look for the man she loves whom she lost all trace of in the Holocaust, and with whom Alex has had his first sexual experiences. The film spawned some of the most frequently quoted lines in Israeli film history, including “naked womens [sic] are vile!”, “Gently, softly, not rough. The lips on you, like crocodile,” “Miss Lola, did you come especially for Alex’s Bar Mitzvah or did you hear from the neighbours I was single?”, and “Farouq! Close the blinds, will you?!”
