Dir.: Valeria Parisi | Italy 2020 | To mark the centenary of Amedeo Modigliani’s death (1884-1920), this documentary explores the life and work of the avant-garde painter who became a classic contemporary artist loved and imitated worldwide. Born in Livorno, Tuscany, the fourth son to a Jewish family, Dedo or Modì, lived a short, tormented life. Alongside in depth interviews and excerpts from his personal relationships with the women who inspired his iconic portraits (Jeanne Hébuterne, Anna Achmatova, Beatrice Hastings), Maverick Modigliani retraces the artist’s steps through the places he frequented the most: the Venezia Nuova district in Livorno, the synagogue, the central market, the mountains where he would find the sandstone and marble for his statues. The film takes us through museum halls, enriched by the works of the Albertina in Vienna and the splendid exhibition dedicated to the artist at Livorno’s City Museum, as well as the National Gallery of Art in Washington and the great museums and art collections in Paris. (90 min., Eng., Fr. & It., Eng. & Heb. subt.). Supported by: Istituto Italiano di Cultura.
