Director Shirly Berkovitz’s films offers an intimate glimpse into the lives of spouses Irit and Asher Shahar whose son, Omri, a naval officer, died in action. Around 20min after being delivered the worst news of her life, Irit petitioned for a procedure known as ‘sperm retrieval’ whereby her late son’s semen would be extracted from his remains. The couple soon find themselves embroiled in a lengthy legal battle with the State of Israel over their unprecedented demand to use their late son’s sperm to have a grandchild with the help of a surrogate. Alongside the many complex legal quandaries and precedents that arise, the film also poses many questions with regards to morality, faith, and values. A profoundly moving, suspenseful, and sombre film about loss, memory, family, relationships, intimacy, and hope.
