The history of the conflict in brief around Sharm el-Sheikh and the Straits of Tiran has great strategic significance for Israel. Maritime traffic between Israel and Africa and the Far East begins at the port of Eilat. As early as 1955, Egypt tried to prevent freedom of navigation there, which was a major factor in the outbreak of the Sinai War (Operation Kadesh). Discussions at the UN in 1957 regarding guaranteeing freedom of navigation, a situation that was maintained until 1967. UN forces are stationed there, the relative peace allows tourism to flourish in Sharm El Sheikh.
