A promotional film about the growth momentum of Hadera in modern times.
Hadera comes from the Arabic word ” الخضيرة” meaning, “the greenish one,” derived from the color of the many marshes that covered it. Hadera’s land, about thirty thousand dunams, was purchased in 1890 by the “Hovevei Zion” association from Salim Khoury. On the 15th of Shvat, 1891, settlers arrived on the land, but many of them died of malaria. Those who survived were forced to move west of the city until the marshes were dried up, among other things, by planting many eucalyptus trees.
Several members of the Nili organisation lived in Hadera. During the British Mandate in Palestine, a train station was established there on the Tel Aviv-Haifa line, and the city was declared a local council by Herbert Samuel, the British High Commissioner. During World War II, four British military bases were established to the west of the council, and their presence brought wealth to the community.
Remnants of historic Hadera can be found in the heart of the City, and the construction boom of 1983, the source of pride for Mayor Yechiel Kahane, still does not compete with the fields and orchards that gave the city its historical identity.
