A 35 episode documentary TV series created by the Israeli Film Service. The script follows a week by week account of events in the 1948 war starting with the 1947 UN resolution on the Partition Plan for Palestine and concluding with Israel’s first Defense Forces Parade, on July 27, 1948.
In the twenty-fifth week of the war and eight hours after the declaration of the establishment of the State of Israel, the invasion of the Arab armies into the land from the north, east, and south begins. Lebanese forces invade the country in the area of Kibbutz Malkia and in the Jordan Valley; Syrian forces invade from Tel al-Qasr towards Kibbutz Tzemah and Kibbutz Degania Alef but are defeated and retreat back to Kibbutz Malkia. The Egyptian army invades from the south and attacks Kibbutz Yad Mordechai and Kibbutz Nirim. The Arab Legion conquers Latrun and attacks Jerusalem. After heavy defeats against the Arab Legion, the Palmach wins the battle of Nabi Yusha. Between May 18 and 19, an attempt is made to break into the Old City of Jerusalem from the Jaffa Gate and the David Citadel; Arab snipers atop the Old City walls fire upon the Palmach forces from every direction, forcing them to retreat. However, Mount Zion and Zion Gate are captured, and a unit led by David Elazar (who would become the ninth chief of the Israeli Defense Forces) breaks into the Jewish quarter, to the delight of its besieged residents. The joy is short-lived, though, as within ten days a fierce battle rages between the Arab Legion and the defenders of the quarter and the situation threatens to end in complete defeat. During negotiations for surrender between the quarter’s religious leaders Rabbi Zeev Mintzberg and Rabbi Zion Mordechai Hazan and the Arab Legion, the latter is breaking into the quarter and occupies it.
