Excerpt from Episode 18 of the TV series ״This Week 25 Years Ago״, created by the Israel Film Service, as part of the 25th-anniversary celebrations of the establishment of the State of Israel.
Operation Nachshon will mark the turning point of the war. March 1948 is a tragic month of battles on the roads. The Arabs take over the traffic routes and hit convoys from ambushes and barricades on the way to Jerusalem: the Hadassah convoy from Jerusalem to Mount Scopus, the Nabi Daniel convoy on its way back from Gush Etzion, the Yehiam convoy, and the Hulda convoy on the way to Jerusalem all fail to complete their missions, with more than 100 casualties. The Yishuv cannot defend itself, and America seeks to withdraw from the partition plan and establish a trusteeship in Eretz Israel instead. The failure of the convoy strategy convinces the leadership that a strategic change is essential. Yigal Yadin describes a night meeting between David Ben-Gurion and the Palmach commanders during which Ben-Gurion makes a courageous decision: to muster Yishuv forces and weapons from all over the country to enable Operation Nachshon to open the road to Jerusalem.
