Excerpt from Episode 9 of the TV series ״This Week 25 Years Ago״, created by the Israel Film Service, as part of the 25th-anniversary celebrations of the establishment of the State of Israel.
The restrictions imposed by the British on the immigration of Jews to Palestine do not deter the Yishuv leadership. Illegal immigration continues to operate after the Partition Plan, mainly by sea, but also by land, air, and through forgery of travel documents. The Haganah’s Mossad for Aliyah Bet helps concentration camp refugees emigrate from Europe to Palestine. However, the British manage to capture most of the ships, issuing only the limited quota of immigration certificates allowed under the White Paper and deporting more than 52,000 immigrants to detention camps in Cyprus. Immigrants captured on the SS Exodus are deported back to the deportee’s detention camps in Germany.
