The first mall in Israel, Dizengoff Center, opened to the public in 1977. Tel-Aviv residents took time to embrace the “City Within a City” concept, and the center became fully operational only years later. The film was shot soon after the construction of a mall in the heart of Tel-Aviv was completed. This color movie showcases the new mall and its unusual architectural features in a city.
Architect Aliza Toledo won the design competition, and Yitzhak Yashar joined her in the detailed planning. Architect Mordechai Ben-Horin designed the residential tower, and Architect Moshe Tzur, the commercial tower. The Developers, Samuel Plato Sharon and the Filtz family, inspired by the Rockefeller Center in New York, envisioned the concept of a “City Within a City,” expecting that the complex would answer all the customers’ needs. Still, customers chose the White City’s [Tel Aviv] open spaces, shops, and cafes. Today, the Center is fully operational.
