Special broadcast for the 17th Independence Day of the State of Israel. Memorial services are held across the country on Yom HaZikaron (Memorial Day for the Fallen Soldiers of Israel). Bereaved families visit the grave of their loved ones on Mount Herzl in Jerusalem, while others attend Yad Labanim House in Petah Tikva. President of Israel Zalman Shazar and Mayor of Jerusalem Mordechai Ish Shalom participate in a ceremony in the city center. At the end of Memorial Day, Shazar hosts members of the diplomatic corps for Independence Day. The ambassadors congratulate him and Minister of Foreign Affairs Golda Meir. Prime Minister Levi Eshkol speaks to the press for the holiday. On Independence Day eve, a torch ceremony is held on Mount Herzl, fireworks are launched, and an official ceremony is held at the Hebrew University Stadium in Givat Ram. IDF soldiers parade through the streets of the capital, and Israelis dance in the streets of cities across the country. In the morning, the IDF military parade takes place in Tel Aviv in presence of the president, the prime minster, and Chief of the General Staff Lieutenant General Yitzhak Rabin. New Hawk missiles, upgraded Sherman tanks, and 160 millimeter mortars are displayed in the parade. 300 Israeli Air Force planes and helicopters partake in an aerobatic display. At the end of the procession, a column of troops of various IDF units marches. Many residents look on the parade. At the end of the holiday, residents dance in a traditional show in the streets of Haifa.
