Pope Paul VI comes for a one day visit to Israel. On the morning of the 5th of January 1964, the pope crosses the border from Jordan and is received by President of Israel Zalman Shazar in Megiddo. The two men exchange greetings in a ceremony attended by Prime Minister Levi Eshkol. From Megiddo, the visitor drives to Nazareth and celebrates a mass at the Basilica of the Annunciation. Later on, the pope takes a tour of the churches by the beach of the Sea of Galilee and the Church of the Transfiguration. Towards the evening, the pope arrives in Jerusalem and is greeted by Mayor Mordechai Ish Shalom. Paul VI prays in the Cenacle on Mount Zion while his representative, Dean of the College of Cardinals Eugène Tisserant, lights a candle at the Chamber of the Holocaust. After a visit to the Abbey of the Dormition, the guest takes his leave at the Mandelbaum Gate.
