This short French-language film, presented by Keren Hayesod, follows Independence Day celebrations in Israel in 1955, starting with footage from a Memorial Day ceremony at a cemetery. Flower bouquets are laid on the graves of fallen troops who fought in the War of Independence and gave their lives for Israel’s freedom, with the narrator acknowledging the persistent link subsequently established between Memorial Day and Independence Day. Next, Independence Day celebrations are kicked off with a military parade on the streets of Tel Aviv; residents watch from sidewalks and balconies as the IDF displays its finest men and women of all divisions, alongside newfangled military vehicles such as the newest model of the Sherman tank, as well as a celebratory Air Force flyover. Later, thousands of spectators gather at Ramat Gan Stadium to watch another military parade. After the flag is raised and speeches are given by Minister of Defense David Ben-Gurion and Minister of Interior Israel Rokach, emblems of honor are given to civilians from all over the country who bravely defended their settlements. Finally, festivities in Haifa forgo military processions in favor of a dance procession; youths from neighboring kibbutzim folk dance their way through the streets, and representatives from various Jewish diasporas present the traditional dances of their countries of origin.
