Nachum “Hawaja” Hurvitz, one of the founding fathers of Kfar Giladi, immigrated from Chisinau in 1904 following the horrific pogrom against the Jewish community of the city. By 1909, he had joined the newly established “Hashomer” organization. This documentary, part of the “On Place and People” series produced by the Israel Film Service, displays Nachum’s life story through interviews with him, his friends, and his family. His narrative intertwines with the story of “Hashomer,” the pioneering Jewish defense organization in the Land of Israel. Seventy years after the founding of “Hashomer,” this captivating account captures the legacy of its now-deceased members, recounting their commitment to the principles of self-reliance and self-defense upon which underlies the organization. The film provides a nuanced portrayal of the members’ lives and their integration into Jewish settlements, exploring the intricate dynamics with the Arab residents of the region and displaying their evolving perspectives on the state of Israel.
