A documentary film produced by the Israel Film Service about the Jewish community on the island of Djerba in Tunisia. Jews have lived on the island since the days of the First Temple. Known as “the gateway to Jerusalem,” Djerba was considered a center of Torah learning in North Africa. The story of the community is told through scenes of daily life and an interview with Chief Rabbi Khalfon Moshe HaCohen, who reflects on its spiritual heritage and enduring traditions. The film offers a glimpse into the community’s ancient synagogues, rich folklore, a printing press specializing in sacred texts, relations with the Arab population, immigration to Israel and integration into society, the professions of its members, and the unique legends, ceremonies, and customs passed down through generations.
